Villa Il Castiglione is the perfect get-away-from-it-all luxury retreat for either a large family, group of friends or an elegantly stylish wedding or special event.
Location and Surrounding Area. Il Castiglione is a magnificent property on a private peak overlooking the exclusive Marina Piccola on the southern coast of Capri. In 2013, it was deservedly voted “Europe House of the Year” in the Wall Street Journal for many reasons. Its cliff top position ensures a 360° panorama and it is only a short stroll down to the Marina Piccola and is within walking distance of the picturesque town of Capri on the other side of the island with its celebrity-studded central piazza.
Legend has it that Ulysses was seduced by the sirens at Marina Piccola. This delightful little bay is sheltered from the wind and it's highly likely that you'll find the locals enjoying the sun here in the winter and the fresh fish restaurants are excellent. The panoramic via Krupp takes you from Marina Piccola to Capri via the Gardens of Augustus. There is so much to see and do on Capri, a boat trip into the fabled Blue Grotto, a visit to the Emperor Tiberius' villas or the house of the Swedish physician Axel Munthe.
Although the island of Capri has long been a favourite haunt of the international jet set, it manages to retain an idyllic beauty and there are some excellent walking trails across Monte Solaro and over to the three picture-postcard Faraglioni rocks. Monte Solaro soars almost 600 metres above sea level and there is also a chairlift from Anacapri. From the summit, you can see not only the whole island but also across to the Amalfi Coast, the city of Naples and the mountains of Calabria.
Villa Il Castiglione is pretty much within walking distance of all the main sights of Capri; it's about a kilometre to Marina Grande and the Piazzetta and 2 km to Villa San Michele. The ferries to Naples leave from Marina Grande and take about 45 minutes. From Naples, you are within easy reach of Pompeii, Vesuvius, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Naples International airport is a ten minute taxi ride from the port.
The Property. Villa Il Castiglione and its gardens cover an area of about 40,000 sq. m. and is built on the site of what was once an ancient Greek temple and then one of Emperor Tiberius's various villas. It has an amazing view over the Faraglioni rock formations that have become eponymous with the name Capri. The original medieval battlements and surrounding walls have been restored by the famous Italian engineer Roberto Adiolfi and the resulting renovation of both the interior and exterior has brought the villa to its present day prestigious status. It has its own private road to the entrance and visitors can enjoy a level of privacy and seclusion without ever feeling cut off from the rest of the island.
Villa Il Castiglione comfortably sleeps up to eight guests in a master suite, two double rooms, a queen size room and a single bedroom, all with en suite bathrooms. The master suite also offers a private studio area and access out onto the terrace. The bedrooms are spacious and all exquisitely decorated with period pieces and Vietri-tiled floors.
The living room with fireplace extends over 200 sq. m. and there are three well-defined relaxing areas with views out over the sea that are absolutely breathtaking. The large Italian style kitchen is on the lower ground floor and is fully equipped with everything necessary to create unforgettable meals out on the various terraces overlooking the sea. The staff quarters are also on the lower ground floor.
The gardens consist of various terraces, a forested lower area and the swimming pool with a marvellous sun terrace with views over the Faraglioni. There are plenty of places to organize al fresco meals or aperitifs under a clear, starry night sky in total privacy.
